PERFORMANCE DEVELOPMENT - M103

The M117 was in production for 21 years, and can be found in 19 models of Mercedes-Benz. During the development AMG created 5.0, 5.4, 5.6, and 6.0 liter versions of M 117 engine with and without the 4-valve heads developed by Erhard Melcher.

The then independent tuning company AMG , installed 4-valve cylinder heads on the 5.6-liter versions at the end of the 1980s, which gave the M117 engines an output of around 270 kW with high compression, and paving the way for the famous "Hammer" 300 E 6.0.

Due to the space-consuming valve control and performance headers, the sheet metal of the front bulkheads on the W 124, and W126 -series were reworked (hammered) at AMG to fit the engine.

These 4-valve AMG M 117 engines are predecessors of the four-valve M 119 later produced by Daimler-Benz for the 500 E ( W 124 ), SE, SEL ( W, V 140 ), SEC (C 140 ) and SL ( R 129 ).

M117 6.0 32 Valve

The Beginning of H.O. Sedans

The AMG 6.0-liter, four-cam, 32-valve V-8 is remarkable in its own right. Conceived by Hans-Werner Aufrecht, fitted with heads, camshafts, and valve gear designed by Erhard Melcher, the engine produced more horsepower than any other road going powerplant in memory. Hartmut Feyhl was an integral part of the development team that built the M117 at AMG (1977 - 1989) and responsible for the first E 300 6.0 "Hammer" as well as the first U.S. spec E 300 6.0 -car built in the Chicago offices of AMG in 1987.
